Electricity consumption in a greenhouse is important in two ways: first, providing electricity for the proper functioning of machinery and equipment, and second, providing electricity by diesel generator for emergencies.
How much electricity is consumed in a greenhouse?
To calculate the electricity consumption in a greenhouse, you need to list the amperage consumption of all equipment and divide it into three sections: general equipment, heating equipment, and cooling equipment. The highest electricity consumption will occur in the greenhouse cooling system, which determines the required power capacity. By adding up the general electricity consumption and the cooling system consumption, and adding 20% for expansion and unforeseen usage, you can estimate the total power capacity needed for the entire facility.
A simpler method is to use engineering tables for this purpose. On page 5 of the "Greenhouse Engineering" book (available for download on the Marsos Cam company's website), there is a table estimating the required electricity based on the greenhouse area (in square feet).
This table excludes electricity consumption from lighting, heavy machinery, and cold storage.
The table has been adjusted based on square meters and Iranian electricity standards as follows. Additionally, the greenhouse area in the table has been rounded.
The table has been rounded to match greenhouse sizes and adjusted based on Iranian electricity standards.
Greenhouse size (square meters) |
Power service entry size (amperes/volts) |
---|---|
<500 |
25/220 (Single-phase) |
1,900-500 |
50/220 (Single-phase) |
2,800-1,900 |
75/220 (Single-phase) |
3,700-2,800 |
100/380 (three-phase) |
7,400-3,700 |
200/380 (three-phase) |
11,200-7,400 |
300/380 (three-phase) |
14,900-11,200 |
400/380 (three-phase) |
18,600-14,900 |
600/380 (three-phase) |
27,900-18,600 |
800/380 (three-phase) |
With this table, the electricity consumption of the greenhouse can be easily estimated. Keep in mind that when calculating the diesel generator for the greenhouse, only essential equipment should be considered.
